How was your week? I turned 58 on Wednesday. The thing that makes this birthday different (cause at this point, who cares? It’s not like I’m saving my allowance for some new music) is (not to bring the party down) my Mom died at 59 (technically 59+1 month) and it just makes me realize just how young it is (quit smoking people!).
The other thing was I have a weird love/hate thing going on with events. I LOVE podcast events, but I would be lying if I said I" “bounce back quickly” upon returning. The strategy I’m taking is to get healthier (and I’ve lose a few pounds each month thanks to the http://monthlychallenge.fit/ (think biggest loser where the prize is bragging rights).
Still Dumbing It Down
I talked about keeping it simple a few issues ago, and took my business accounts (which were in the same bank as my personal checking, etc) and moved them to an online bank (Sofi). I’m not sure why, but that separation is making it easier to see what is going on in the business end of my world, and this other bank is the one I use for groceries. I am currently using Fiverr Workspace to track my income and expenses. My favorite feature (forwarding receipts to a special email that goes into a “shoebox” where I can then later categorize them) isn’t working. It’s a great system, and their support is great, but I got kind of a “It’s on the list to fix” response that made me feel that feature wouldn’t be back soon (so I manually enter any expenses or income the minute they come in - which isn’t a bad thing). I paid $216 for a year last year, and without that feature, I might as well use waveapps.com, which is free (and they make their money by connecting you with an optional accountant/book keeper.
So if I’m going to pay for something, it will be an accountant to help me dot my I’s and cross my T’s
MY LATEST EPISODES
School of Podcasting
I got a lot of good feedback on the last episode of the School of Podcasting where my audience chimed in on their top podcasting pet peeves.
Ask the Podcast Coach
I share some about my Podfest experience, and we talk a bit about Video (and many other topics). listen
Future of Podcasting
I hear people mention the fountain app, and it is one of those “New Podcast Apps” that enables you to stream cryptocurrency, and this app is painting outside the box. So after spending almost two weeks using the Fountain App to listen to podcasts, Do I like it? Found out here

I saw in Facebook something that somewhat troubled me, and I talk about it in a quick video titled “Consistency in Schedule Vs Consistency in Content.”
Dave’s Blog
As everyone talks about the Good O'l’ Days when the event was small, I asked, “Why Do Conferences Move Away From Single-Track Events?”
What Caught My Eye?
Behind the Scenes of Toy Story
The filmmakers behind Toy Story reflect 10 years after it was released. Why was it successful? They ignored all the “rules” of animation. Video
Fathom Stats An Easy to Read, GDPR Complaint Analytics System For Your Website
Google is switching to Google Analytics 4; from what I hear, it will do even more things I will never use. I pay for a plugin called Monster Insights every year at Black Friday. The “Cookie” is going away, so if I end up paying someone to translate the “Free” analytics from Google (where you pay with your privacy) why not get an analytics tool that makes it easy to understand? So I’m playing with Fathom Analytics first (I heard about them in a community group). You can even make your stats public (here is the stats for podcastconsultant.com, which has had a whopping two visitors since I installed the analytics.
Yet Another Joke at The Expense of Podcasters on TV
On SNL a mock gameshow focused on big Hollywood asks one of its contestants, “What kind of show is it?” and when she answers, “A podcast” it is once again a punchline… see sketch.
A Book On Naming Things
I bought the book Hello My Name is Awesome on Audible (all about naming and branding). While primarily about naming companies, some good stuff that could apply to naming a podcast. Don’t name your company xobni (it takes a while, but it is inbox backwards….)
What’s Next?
I added a new speaking gig. I’ll be in Nashville speaking at Rock and Pod (a podcasting event for music podcasters - but really, everyone). March 17-19.
on the School of Podcasting (follow) I had someone DISAGREE with me, and so we had a really good discussion about interviews (he uses the spray and pray) method. THANK GOD, I pressed record when we started talking, “Just in case,” and he approved my use. As it wasn’t a planned interview, there will be more editing to trim the fat, but I remember smiling when I pressed stop (being very happy I had caught it on tape). That will come out on Monday.
Lastly, I had a few people Buy Me a Coffee (or 5 Bill THANKS!) for my birthday. I deeply appreciate it.
And if you feel like starting a podcast… well, you know where to go.
