An Unexpected Legacy
My heart is still heavy a week after losing my friend Niel Guilarte. He was 51. A friend, a doting father to an eleven-year-old daughter, and a loving husband. His absence leaves a hole in our hearts that can’t easily be filled.
But Niel lives on in his work. He was the director of The Messenger: A Podcast Documentary, and through that, his voice and passion remain with us.
Randy Cantrell started Leaning Towards Wisdom with the idea of sharing common-sense lessons with the world—especially his grandchildren. When I go for walks in the summer, I listen to Leaning Towards Wisdom. It reminds me that what we create today can leave an impact far beyond what we imagine.
The Power of Voice
I once repaired an old reel-to-reel recorder in my basement (I think I’ve shared this before). I found an old tape reel, threaded it onto the machine, and took it upstairs. I plugged it in under the kitchen cabinets while my mom cooked dinner.
I pressed play.
My mom made a strange noise. Startled, I asked, “What’s wrong?”
She turned to me, eyes wide, and said, “That’s my father’s voice.”
She hadn’t heard it in over a decade. He had died when I was three. She ran out of the room, overwhelmed with emotion. As a teenager, I didn’t understand what had just happened—I had never seen my mother cry. But at that moment, I realized just how powerful audio could be.
Your Voice Matters
The next time you sit down to record, remember you’re doing more than just making a podcast.
You might be crafting a résumé that helps land your next job. Those interviews? They sharpen your listening and communication skills, serving you well in every aspect of life. You're learning to manage deadlines, handle stress, and navigate conversations more easily.
And in some cases, you may be preserving your voice for an eleven-year-old daughter—so she never forgets what you sound like.
Please donate to Niel’s GoFundMe. We are “this close” to our goal.
Podcasters Happy Hour
March 24th at 7 PM ET
With Podcast Movement Starting on March 31, we are moving Podcaster Happy Hour to the 24th. This month, we are going to have a full hour of networking. Bring a beverage if you wish and a well-polished elevator pitch. The goal is to break us into small rooms where we can all introduce ourselves, make new friends, catch up with old ones, and increase our network.

Captivate - No Payments Until April
Captivate (the media host I use the most) is having a sale where you can sign up today and not pay until April. (this is not an April fool’s joke).
ViralSweep - Grow your Email and SMS List
I’ve been playing in the world of newsletters and one thing keeps popping up and that is ViralSweep. This is in conjunction of doing contests and giveaways. It might seem pricy at $49 a month, but if you could double your email subscribers, it might just pay for itself. Check it Out.
Prince Had Fun
Here is a clip of an unaired performance by Prince. The thing I love about it is everyone in this band is highly talented, and having fun. In some cases, the parts were simple (the bass player played one note for most of this), but the whole thing wouldn’t have worked without it.
