The Ins and Outs of Being an "Influencer"
Which means people actually listen to you..
This newsletter contains affiliate links. Not all of them, but some of them. I earn a small commission, and it doesn’t cost you anything. I call that a win-win.
Content Creator vs Influencer
I was on a zoom call with a coaching client and I asked him what gear they had purchased. They rattled off a list and ended with a Zoom P4, and a Rodecaster Pro. To which I asked, “Why did you buy the Rodecaster if you already had the Zoom P4?” His answered surprised me:
”You said it was cool.” (The unit is $600!) and that’s when I learned I needed to watch what I say. I don’t consider myself an “Influencer” (mainly because I give out advice that is frequently ignored, only to have the person later ask, “But my show’s not growing…”).
It Starts With Value
A content creator works on delivering value to their audience. When they do, not only do people watch one video, but they will come back again and again. Why? Because you’re not wasting their time. In other words, its all about them.
Look I’m on a Boat
This is the influencer. They probably were on a reality TV show and they acted the fool 24/7 and that landed them and agent and a manager. They either have some sort of “VIP” group they are selling, or promoting a product they have partnered with.
Does the product fit the audience? Nope, but they got paid and that’s what matters to them. They might say their life inspires others. OK, to do what? Rent a Lamborghini drive it to the biggest house in town, and get out and take video before the owners come out and ask what is up?
The is no true value for the audience, the content is all about them.
What Makes a True Influencer?
People who often influenced were teachers who gave me advice, and I tried it, and it worked. You are an influencer when people listen to what you have to say and then act on it.
What You Do With That Influence?
So people are listening to you. How do I make money? The best way is to make a product that fits their needs. You know their needs because you’ve studied your audience so you could make amazing content.
Now instead of selling a brand that doesn’t fit, you are offering a product or service that continues to add value to the lives of your audience.
Be a content creator who influences their audience.
TOMORROW! August 19th I’m starting not one but TWO live classes at the School of Podcasting. We experimented with this last month and we are bringing it back with a twist.
Class One: Starting Your Podcast in Six Weeks
We did this last month, and got come great reviews (and some feedback - more on that in a second) and so we brought it back with a twist (as we love to experiment) it’s free. The target student is one who has not launched yet. We meet once a week for six weeks (and yes they will be recorded).
See schoolofpodcasting.com/sixweeks
Class Two: Growing Your Audience
The feedback we got from those who had already been podcasting was they wanted more content on growing your audience. They also said they loved the live format with the ability to do Q&A. So I’m taking the course on growing your audience, and doing it live. I can’t wit to do this as a group.
We all will write down our downloads pre and post class, and each week we will put these strategies in place one by one and measure their effectiveness. This will require some time to take these steps. It’s for someone who is serious about growing their audience, reach, and influence.
To take part in this class you need to be a member of the School of Podcasting (so NOW is the time to use that “ newsletter “ coupon to save.
I’m very excited to lead both classes.

Podcast not growing as fast as you want? I’ve repackaged the “Podcast Hot Seat" (including a price change) and made it more ala cart. We all miss our own mistakes because we are too close to the content. Pull your car into the podcast garage, and let me take a peak at it. See www.fixmypodcast.com
I’ve had two people sign up and they loved the service. Are you next?

What’s Coming In The Future
The question of the month for August is, “We all want a bigger audience. Let's flip this over. What is the smallest number of downloads you would continue to produce episodes? If you fall below that number, would you stop, or try to figure out how to increase your numbers. I need your answers by August 28th. Answer NOW
