From the Imposter to the Lunatic - Handling the Podcaster Ego
Steadying the Extreme Swings

Your Show Might Be Boring
I always find it fascinating that two phrases almost travel in a pack and appear back to back. They are:
1. I need help growing my podcast
2. My content is fine.
Well apparently it’s not the study showed that most listeners stopped listening cause you were boring.
When I was at CEX last week Chenell Basilio from the Growth in Reverse show said that your content isn’t part of the marketing plan IT IS THE MARKETING PLAN.
So this week on the School of Podcasting I’ll be mentioning this on episode 1000. My worry is the wide swinging (and fairly fragile) ego of the podcaster. Hint that their content isn’t stellar and they may crumble faster than a stale brownie still on the counter from last week.
Surround them with their audience telling them their farts don’t stink, and they may walk around asking everyone, “Don’t you know who I am?”
I feel very lucky that the first job I got out of college had a sign when you first walked in, “CONSTANT IMPROVEMENT” and that has been my mantra ever since.
The phrase I always use is, “You’re never as good as people tell you you are, and you’re never as bad as people say you are.”
Being able to accept constructive criticism is a skill that takes practice. You might want to try it.
In the meantime, take a look at the list above and stop filling me on “Mr. Whiskers, that crazy cat” instead of fulfilling the promise of your episode title.

Stuff That Caught My Eye
Systeme.io
I heard about Systeme.io in a mastermind I’m in, and I’ve seen other “All in One” tools, but this one had a free version, and the paid version didn’t require me a second mortgage. It does Email, Communities, Digital and Physical Products, Affiliates, it will wash your car… ok maybe not, but with the free version you could easily test an idea to see if anyone would be interested in it. It doesn’t have an RSS to Email option (I think, I have a call with them on Friday), and Beehiv, Kit, and Substack all have that whole, “Refer a friend/Cross-promotion” thing going on.
Looking For a Virtual Assistant?
I wish I had found onlinejobs.ph sooner. I just hired someone from the Philippines a day or two before I found onlinejobs.ph where well vetted virtual assistants are categorized by their skills and experience. I’m moving some very boring things off my plate. What do you outsource? The things that drive you nuts and lead to burnout. Check it out
What’s Coming In The Future
As I mentioned before episode 1000 comes out Monday, and I’m going to try and tackle the “How Do I Grow My Podcast?” If you’ve been a listener and would like to say “Thanks for 1000 Episodes!” You can do so HERE.
