Recharge, Refocus, Reignite
It's been a really crappy week
This newsletter contains affiliate links. Not all of them, but some of them. I earn a small commission, and it doesn’t cost you anything. I call that a win-win.
Do you have a “Go to” way to recharge?
I’m not looking to hold a pity party, but this week was rough. Monday my friend of 20 years Todd Cochrane, died. Tuesday was woman was stabbed on a bus by a guy who had been arrested 14 times. The video was gross. It’s different than the movies when it’s real. Wednesday Charlie Kirk is assassinated.
I made the mistake of going to twitter to get updates about Charlie. I was shown a video from about the third row. The one where you see the bullet go into his neck, and blood goes everywhere. I urge you to not look for this video. It creates what I call a brain tattoo that you can’t unsee. It’s horrible.
Thursday I learn that Charlie’s wife and two very small daughters were in attendance. The part that really made me worry were the people on twitter cheering and laughing about his death. One guy had a megaphone saying, “We got Charlie in the neck, now who’s up next?” It made me very, very sad. It should. It’s horrendous. It’s disgusting.
Return to My First Love
Before there was podcasting, my main creative outlet was music. I love Van Halen’s first album so much I don’t listen to it and save it for “Emergencies Only.” I also love to laugh. Consequently, I just bought my ticket for the Spinal Tap Sequel.
What is your go to way to recharge? Fishing? Baking? Knitting? Another favorite of mine is the cry “Uncle Dave!” followed by the best hugs in the world. Life is short, and your number could be called at any minute. Be sure to recharge your batteries.
Changing the World One Download at a Time
The mainstream media, once again, proved that they can’t be counted on to hear the truth. It is OBVIOUS that Charlie Kirk was assassinated, and yet one channel put out the thought, “Maybe it was one of his supporters with an accidental celebratory gunshot. Shame on you.
So what do we do? Well, revenge is not a great strategy. All we can do is get back on the mic, both left and right thinkers, and talk. More importantly, we need listen. The reason a far left or far right person seems so “out there” is because we’v never heard their side before. We are surrounded in our own little bubble hearing the same messaging over and over. It would help if we would start at least hearing the other side. We don’t have to agree, but we could at least hear each other out.
Shutting People Up?
I didn’t know who Charlie was really. I had seen a short or two, but I didn’t know him by name. I do now (so much for silencing him). I watched the Billy Joel documentary on Max, and one of the things that made his album really sell was when the church protested it. He wrote them a note, “Please protest my next album.”
Instead of focusing on others, maybe we need to focus on US. Focus on our families, and our relationships. Ah crap I’m on another tangent…. my heart is heavy now. (Checks watch…8 hours until Spinal tap 2).
We are the Media
The mainstream media is a joke. They have lost their integrity and are owned by big pharma. So we can get back on the microphone, and entertain and educate people. We can be the distraction they need. We can be the intelligence and viewpoint they need. We can also be the person who says, “Maybe we should be teaching people about de-escalation in our schools.”
I don’t think Charlie Kirk was murdered because of his viewpoint. I think he was murdered because he was effective. His company was growing and making people nervous (kind of like when YouTube waved their magic wand and made all the YouTubers “Podcasters” because Tiktok was taking advertising revenue away - TikTok was effective)
Podcasting Can Change the World
20 years ago I said, “I think podcasting can change the world.” I still believe that. I still believe that people are good (even when I don’t agree with them).
I believe we all should focus on what we believe like:
Oreo cookie blizzards at Dairy Queen are amazing
David Lee Roth was a better front man, but not as good a singer as Sammy Hagar
Killing People Is Wrong
Stealing things from other people is wrong
Lou Reed, while unique, was an awful musician.
They should quit messing with Reese’s Cups and stick with the original
Just putting the words, “Mountain Dew” on a bottle doesn’t make it tase good. (new Mountain Dew fucsia!)
Podcasting will miss Todd Cochrane
It’s been a tough week. Go recharge your batteries (however you do that). The world needs you now more than ever.

Music Streaming is Broken
This video shows how bad the music business is messed up. Why do podcasters care? Because a lot of people are putting their eggs in the Spotify basket. The same people who are messing up the musicians, and could care less about creators.
Dex is Pretty Cool
I might’ve mentioned this before, but Dex is a great relationship manager that does a really nice job of montiring your contact online (note in a creep way). For example if someone changes their title on LinkedIn, I get notified. I can set recurring tasks to follow up. It’s less than $20 a month. So far I’m liking it. Check it out
Promo Amp - Build Your Email With Giveaways
I bought Promo Amp after trying a few other options (it’s going off App Summo very soon). I know I’ve joined email lists because of giveaways, and this makes facilitating that very easy.

I’ve got tips on social media, and more tips on growing your audience. Got an idea for an episode or article, I’d love to hear it.
