BEFORE WE START: Thanks for Voting
I want to thank everyone who voted for me, as I haven’t been contacted, I’m going to assume that this will be the first Podcast Movement I won’t be speaking. There is still a chance I may be selected.
Feeling Jealous? You’re Looking at the Wrong Thing
When I started podcasting in 2005, I was the first person to teach people how to podcast. Rob Walch did it tangentially by interviewing podcasters (so you could say he was the first podcast about podcasting) but I was the first to lead with “How to Podcast” content.
Then other came and whizzed right by me. Why many of them didn’t have day jobs and I did (so they had more time to promote). Some of them had LOTS of money in the bank which gave them a much bigger runway to take off. I was working two jobs and going to school. Most had sales backgrounds and were much better at sales and made more money.
And all of them I consider friends. I mean who else can I geek out with and talk podcasting? Instead of getting jealous, I was inspired and happy to see that that type of success was possible.
When I was married my wife and her one daughter had an INSANE connection. They both “Get” each other. I pity the fool who tries to get between those two. So one could get jealous of their connection, or you can be happy they they both have such a strong connection and many people only dream of that kind of connection.
Wow the Disciples are Buff
I’ve been binge watching “The Chosen” (aff) on Amazon. A cool adaptation of the bible where all the disciples of Jesus are buff and hot, and unlike most Christian productions, it features some good acting.
But there was a scene where two disciples started looking at the status of the other disciples and asked, “Hey can we be your #1 and #2 guy?” and Jesus got a bit frustrated because they weren’t looking at the right things (the mission) and instead their egos were getting the best of them.
Some Things to Help You Keep Your Ego Unbruised
First of all when someone says, “I started making six figures three years after I started.” Notice what they are quoting, TOTAL INCOME. Nobody says, “I remember when I made 27.38 in profit after three years of podcasting. They always quote total income pre-tax, pre-expenses. This is much like quoting monthly download numbers (instead of epsode numbers after 30 days).
There is a Dark Web of Podcasting
I can’t get fully into it now, but there are ways people get downloads that are not the most above board. So when you hear someone getting insane downloads, notice they don’t quote their completion percentage.
When you use a service and your numbers go way up, and when you stop that campaign they go right back to where they were pre-campaign, I’m moved to believe those won’t “real people” pressing play (or if they were, it was to get to the next level in a video game).
Because you are a good, honest, citizen, you grow your audience the old fashioned way, you earn it.
August 19th I’m starting not one but TWO live classes at the School of Podcasting. We experimented with this last month and we are bringing it back with a twist.
Class One: Starting Your Podcast in Six Weeks
We did this last month, and got come great reviews (and some feedback - more on that in a second) and so we brought it back with a twist (as we love to experiment) it’s free. The target student is one who has not launched yet. We meet once a week for six weeks (and yes they will be recorded).
See schoolofpodcasting.com/sixweeks
Class Two: Growing Your Audience
The feedback we got from those who had already been podcasting was they wanted more content on growing your audience. They also said they loved the live format with the ability to do Q&A. So I’m taking the course on growing your audience, and doing it live. I can’t wit to do this as a group.
We all will write down our downloads pre and post class, and each week we will put these strategies in place one by one and measure their effectiveness. This will require some time to take these steps. It’s for someone who is serious about growing their audience, reach, and influence.
To take part in this class you need to be a member of the School of Podcasting (so NOW is the time to use that “ newsletter “ coupon to save.
I’m very excited to lead both classes.

Podcast not growing as fast as you want? I’ve repackaged the “Podcast Hot Seat" (including a price change) and made it more ala cart. We all miss our own mistakes because we are too close to the content. Pull your car into the podcast garage, and let me take a peak at it. See www.fixmypodcast.com
I’ve had two people sign up and they loved the service. Are you next?

We’ve Come A Long Way
As the youngest in my family, I was the only person in first grade who knew who Jimi Hendrix was when he died. I found this video from Jimi play the Royal ALbert Hall, where apparently not everyone was thrilled, but those who were really danced funny.
The thing that really made me scratch my head is Jimi gets introduced, and instead of launching into a song, he walks up to the mic, explains a little bit about what is going on and explains how they will just “Jam” to start. It’s fun watching the stuffy british folks all mildly shake their head “No” as they listen. Also, back then as the PA wasn’t loud enough, you just got more microphones (Jimi has three).
