The One Thing That is Stopping You Is You
I celebrated my sixtieth birthday this week. Although I take pride in reaching this milestone, certain aspects of aging concern me. Maintaining good health becomes increasingly difficult as the body naturally declines. This presents a significant challenge.
I dropped 20 lbs when I was in my twenties. Doing the EXACT SAME THING now has much less (if any) result. So staying healthy when most of the things we put into our mouth is CRAP is a challenge.
One more quick analogy: Last month, I worked the Podpage booth at Podfest. I had set up booths before, but not this one. I was somewhat laughing as I sweated, crawled all over the floor, or balanced on a chair, trying to hang things. “Enjoy the learning curve.” Was it a pain? Yes. Will it be a pain next time? No. I’ve been through the learning experience.
What does this have to do with podcasting?
Creating AMAZING content takes time, dedication, knowledge, insight, and many other nouns and adjectives that I don’t feel like looking up. Keep this in mind.
Podcasting is not impossible. It’s not as complicated as you think. I noticed via a survey I’m running for the School of Podcasting (if you’re a listener, please share your insights), and I see where I attract people over forty years old. In some cases these people are less tech savvy. That is fine. That is why I’m here.
I had a client whose computer had some issues recording remotely. I advised them to close all the programs except the one they were using (in this case, Chrome). They said they had. Then I asked, “How many tabs are open?” They replied: forty.
Why do you have forty tabs open????
Because I don’t know how to bookmark or save anything.
Now I’m not poking fun or throwing shade (we all start from different perspectives). But I’m pretty sure that you know that I know saving things and adding bookmarks is maybe two clicks. It’s not complicated. There are tools like Notejoy. But it does require you to learn a new thing (and that can seem scary). This is ESPECIALLY scary if you’re convinced you CAN’T DO IT.
So, the biggest thing stopping you from getting where you need to go is probably you. I run into this so much that I may take some psychology courses.
Have you ever eaten something you had convinced yourself you didn’t like as a child? I convinced myself as a child I didn’t like Brussels sprouts. I eat them all the time now. So maybe you need to go back and re-test yourself. Perhaps you didn’t like technology ten years ago, but the technology of ten years ago isn’t the technology of today. Things have gotten easier, and you’ve acquired more knowledge that you could be sharing.
It’s time to challenge your decades-old perceptions. I can help

Captivate (the media host I use the most) is having a sale where you can sign up today and not pay until April. (this is not an April fool’s joke).
Capsho Has Cut Their Price in Half!
Capsho (a great AI tool to help your writing, show notes, and more) has taken a step back, looked at what it did (and, more importantly, who its audience was), implemented some new features, and lowered its price. Previously it was $99/month and now it’s $49/month. I personally love the blog posts it writes based on my transcripts. Check it out.
Katana Video - Make Zoom Meetings Pretty on YouTube
The founder, Sam Bhattacharyya, worked at Streamyard and has made this tool at katana.video, which is currently free. So, if you're putting Zoom videos on YouTube, this might spice them up. Here is a demo video.
Storytelling Secrets From Southpark Creators
My episode with Danny Peña has me going through (more) of his continuing “Because of my podcast story.” But this latest episode (after watching this video) has me thinking I could’ve done this episode better than, “and then this…” Check it out.
Chappel Roan’s Grammy Speach
While I’m not a fan of her music (she seems like yet another manufactured pop singer—except she has 5 lbs of eye makeup), I was impressed with her courage to bite the hand that feeds on such a huge stage. Watch Video.
