Remember When You Said “2025 is THE YEAR!”
You had all the intentions to start a podcast, but here it is, 10 days into the new year, and you haven’t moved. Why?
In most cases, it is what is called impostor syndrome, and most of us suffer from this (think, “Why would anyone listen to ME?”). Well, I’ve got help for you with two episodes on Impostor Syndrome and even a celebrity edition. Learn more, and overcome your fear.
Do you need a checklist? I have one HERE.
Maybe You Started and Ran Out of Gas
I’ve mentioned coming into podcasting with the right intentions. Sure, we’d all like to quit our day jobs and make so much money that we wouldn’t need health care, but that only happens for a few—quickly.
Also, it’s a lot of work. Last year, I attempted to learn Spanish using Babbel. I did little lessons for about five minutes a day, but then (shockingly), it seemed like I wasn’t moving very fast, and I eventually lost interest.
My WHY for learning Spanish was, “It might come in handy someday,” which is NOT the most compelling reason. You need a good WHY.
In my latest episode, I interviewed Doc G, author of the book “The Purpose Code” and we talked about the big GIANT goal (called the Big P) and “Little P” is about embracing the journey, not just fixating on the destination.
I have a segment in my show called “Because of My Podcast,” and School of Podcasting student Zita Christian’s website for her show My Spouse Has Dementia was featured in US News and World Reports. When she started, it wasn’t about making money or fame. Her mission was to tell the truth about this horrible disease. That passion carried her through; now, three years later, she is getting more recognition. Her show is helping spouses who really need it. If her goal was quick money, none of this would have happened.
I always recommend that any time you get any positive feedback, you be sure to save it somewhere (I’m serious; do this). That way, when your gas is a little low, you can refer to those words to remember why you are a podcaster.
School of Podcasting January Discount
I don’t do “Black Friday,” as I’ve tried it a few times with HORRIBLE results (one person paying next to nothing was upset to find I wasn’t going to edit his show for free).
But as this is the beginning of the year, I’ve created a coupon code “newsletter25” to give you 25% off either a monthly or yearly subscription.

Understand Podcast Media Hosts - Finding the Right One For YOU
The Podcast Growth Summit (by Captivate and Adobe). I lead off this summit. (more on Captivate in a second)
Stuff That Caught Me Eye
Captivate - No Payments Until April
Captivate (the media host I use the most) is having a sale where you can sign up today and not pay until April. (this is not an April fool’s joke).
Chris Stone Shows Off the New Shure MV7i
This Shure MV7i Microphone comes at podcasting in a whole new direction. It is a USB microphone that looks like the SM7B, MV7, etc, but on the bac,k you have a USB output and an XLR INPUT (actually, it’s a combo jack so I could plug in my guitar).
So for the person who wants to travel, or has guests/co-hosts in the room with you. This is the ultimate minimalist setup. To microphones - one plugged into each other, and the MV7i plugged into a laptop (or your PHONE! - with a special cable).
BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE - You run the mic through Shure’s software (which works on any device), and you can add deplosive effects and NOISE REMOVAL, so if you don’t want to turn off the air conditioner, you don’t have to.
The price is currently $349, but this is a niche microphone for people in that unique situation that could make excellent, quiet recordings with minimal effort.
Check out Chris’ full review.
Heartbeat Up’s Their Game
I am a HUGE fan of Heatbeat for building a community. It is super flexible, and since I purchased it years ago, you can now have courses and a whole lot more. They recently restructured their payment processing, and it is slick. If you’re thinking of starting a community (and don’t want to be like me and get kicked out of your own Facebook group for three weeks), Heartbeat is terrific.
This is a video that shows off the new payment system.
The Music Industry Is Still Filled with Weasels
This guy is helping musicians get their music into movies and TV but spills some of the most unfiltered views and behind-the-scenes shenanigans in the music industry (like Spotify). Spotify contributes around a third of UMG's streaming revenues, which appears to be growing. UMG is working on becoming a monopoly. Check it this short.
What’s Coming In The Future
Next School of Podcasting
As it is the first of the year, instead of doing “How to launch,” I want to revisit avoiding burnout and help people gather realistic expectations. I saw a Facebook ad where some “Bro” was guaranteeing that you would make hundreds of dollars your first month. You don’t monetize a podcast; you monetize an audience (and this guy wreaked of Snake Oil). Shockingly, he was not on a boat.
