Breaking Up with Evernote: Why I'm Saying Goodbye After More Than a Decade
And What This Has to Do With Podcasting
I got what I felt was a rude email from Evernote (the VERY popular note-taking app) that I’ve used since 2012.
My bill was going from $69/year to $129
While we’ve had a good run, they don’t deliver enough value, and there are other less expensive tools. (Honest, I will tie this into podcasting in a bit). I flirted with Apple notes (I really like sending an email to an address and having it turn into a note). I played with Joplin (way nerdy), and looked at Obsidian (overkill), Notion (overkill) and many more.
I wanted a basic note-taking app, the ability to turn an email into a note, a web clipping extension for the web, and a pretty interface and ease of use.
Enter NoteJoy
My answer after a free hours of searching and YouTubing, was Note Joy. It does everything I want and their paid plans start at $48/year (I ended up going with the $96/year which is more than I' was paying at Evernote but less than I would be paying -they also have a free plan).
They also made it PAINLESS to move. Other apps I would have had to move one Notebook at a time (and Evernote, like an Ex screaming they want their Black T-Shirt back) is making it hard to leave by limiting the number of notes you can export to 100 at a time. I had 2356 notes. No, thank you.
So What Do I Get If I Stick with Evernote?
Say it with me: ugh, they are adding “AI.” I highly suspect the next time I pick up a box of Frosted Flakes, I expect to see a picture of Tony the Tiget with giant letters reading “NOW WITH AI!”
They also add more tools for people who want to share with other people, and I don’t remember the rest because the bottom line is, I won’t use any of their new features, so almost doubling my price puts me in the column of “Not your target audience.” This leads me back to your podcast.
You Have to Be Yourself On Your Podcast
Yes, you NEED to know your audience to give them what they need, but you also have to BE YOURSELF.
It is hard not to be yourself, and if you put on a persona, you often slip back into being “you.”
But here is the fun part that will bring all this together.
In the same way that Evernote is not the app they were in 2012, neither am I the same person.
So if you continue to be yourself in your podcast and YOU change your podcast WILL change and some people will like it and stay, and others will not. That is OK.
There Will Be Ups and Downs
So as you adjust your podcast, there will be those that stay and those that take on the name, “Not your target audience,” and if you’re happy doing the show you want to do, forget about those people (you are already just a voice inside their head).
Whatever Evernote Did Right
They let me know three weeks in advance, leaving me more than enough time to find an app that meets my needs and budget. So anytime you’re going to rebrand or change your show, ALWAYS keep your audience informed (in fact get them involved in the decision).

Why Podcasts Fade Away and How Coaching Can Help
Question of the Month
So podcasting 2.0. What do you know about it? If you do know about it, what do you think? How hard is it to get someone to use a different app? All in all, what are your thoughts (good and bad) about podcasting 2.0? If you don't know anything about it, please leave that answer. I'm trying to gauge how people feel about it.
Also, tell us a little bit about your show (your elevator pitch) and clearly say your name and website URL so I can add it to the show notes/description.

Selling Digital Products
We all know there are places like Patreon and Supercast to start ongoing crowdfunding campaigns, but what if I want to sell an episode at a time? I’m looking into Sellfy, SendOwl, and others, and now it’s time to do the math…. stay tuned.
The Return of Michael Hyatt
In the past I would start the year reading Michael Hyatt’s book, “Platform: Get Noticed in Noisey World” (aff) and over the years (speaking of changing) he is much more of a production efficiency specialist. He has a new course coming out soon called Life Focus that looks 100% completely unique as in never seen anything like this before. If you need some help with focus (THAT’S ME) this looks like a life changing course (and you can get the take home version of the game).
Hacking a TRUE Video Podcast
You may not know this but YouTube videos are technically NOT a podcast (it’s a YouTube video). If you wanted to make a TRUE video podcast (with an RSS feed), and were using WordPress, you could use the PowerPress plugin and tie it into Streamable and have a TRUE video podcast (or if you want people to watch YOUR videos without the distractions from YouTube - this is a nice AFFORDABLE solution).
I love that it gives me a progress bar as it processes my video (others leave you in the dark). Here is a sample lesson from the School of Podcasting using Streamable.
An Interesting Spin For an Audio/Video Player For WordPress
I knew Presto Player was a great video player for WordPress, but now they’ve added some of the same cool functionality that will work with any media host on WordPress.
A More Affordable Facebook Alternative
I LOVE Heartbeat for communities (and the School of Podcasting is going ALL IN on Heartbeat), but if you wanted something focused on JUST community, you might check out BetterMode. For $19/month (on the yearly plan), if you're not looking
Your Podcast Website
In 1997, I started building a website with Microsoft Front Page, the Dreamweaver, and eventually WordPress and now Podpage. I’m launching a new podcast all about Your Podcast Website (do you need one? What do you put on it? Seo? Best Practice? Tools to make it Neeto…).
Regarding your podcast website, what are your struggles, thoughts, etc. I have a quick 2 minute form and I need your insights. PLEASE.
You can sign up to be notified as a give “behind the scenes” of the launch at www.yourpodcastwebsite.com
