Yesterday was the Fourth of July. To those in the UK, I hope you got out to vote. For me, it was a holiday filled with burgers, corn on the cob, and hanging out with my family. It was fun. My city shoots fireworks four blocks from my house. This is great. There are no parking woes and no traffic. I just walk to the end of the street, say, “Ooh, Ahhhh,” and then walk home.
Not this year. I got halfway there, and it started to rain pretty heavily. I turned to walk back home. I opened my phone and started to enter what I had eaten into my Cronometer app (it tracks my food and exercise).
As it’s raining, I’m walking at a good clip. The next thing I know, I am extending my left arm to catch my fall. My right is doing the same with my phone in hand and the screen is face down. The sidewalks were uneven, my right foot had been stopped dead, and I was going down.
Once I stopped skidding on the concrete, my left hand was dirty, and I prepared to see the condition of my screen. It was fine (thank you, otterbox case). My knees? Not so much.
Nothing is more fun than trying to heal a wound on your body where that part of the body constantly moves. When I put on a disinfectant, it hurt a lot. It reminded me of those times when I was a young boy. Mom would come and make it all better. As I applied some New Skin, I started blowing on it, wishing the stinging would disappear. My Mom would do this, and it somewhat worked.
Dave, what does this have to do with podcasting? Hang on…
I’m ambidextrous. I was born left-handed, but after not being able to get a baseball mitt or scissors, I just decided when I was six years old that being left-handed was too much of a pain and switched (which is probably why the guitar came pretty easy to me. The left hand is the one on the fretboard).
This morning I opened the fridge and went to grab my pitcher of water - with my left hand. Ouch. I went to unscrew the pain meds bottle, with my left hand. Ouch. You get the picture.
When Things Take a Turn For The Worse…
So when something goes in a direction you didn’t want. For me, I thanked God that I didn’t have any casts or crutches. Then, I realized I was going to learn new things. I’ve never wondered how you put on underwear without bending your knees, but now I know. My right hand will take over until this pain in my wrist goes away (luckily, typing isn’t much if I don’t bang on the keys too hard). I will be doing things differently. Who knows, I may find a new way of doing something I decide to use going forward.
Get Creative
When Howard Stern was on terrestrial radio, he couldn’t curse. Some say he was better because he had to get creative. If you want to do video but can’t afford the gear, then work on talking in a way that triggers the theater of the mind. Did your co-host quit? Maybe it’s time to record a solo show?
We don’t like being out of our comfort zone, but that is where we learn.
Next week, I’ll tell you how I’ve been out of my comfort zone a lot recently and how it’s a good thing.

New Storytelling Book From Matthew Dicks
I love, love, love listening to Matthew Dicks explain how stories work, and how you can make yours better. I recommend his book Storyworthy on a daily basis. He has come out with a follow-up book called Stories Sell: Storyworthy Strategies to Grow Your Business and Brand. I’m up to chapter four, and while it’s not quite as “how to” as the original, it pulls you in. Why? Because he’s making his point with a story.
What’s Coming In The Future
Podcaster Happy Hour
I started this during covid, and later we went back to normal. This will be monthly meetings (typically the last Monday of the month) where I will bring in a podcast service to do a demo, then we will follow that up with a networking and Q&A. Get on this list to be notified.
Next School of Podcasting (I think…)
Someone asked me how much I spend each month to create my podcast. It’s more than I thought…
